What is software?
Software is a set of instructions that tell the computer what to do.
There are two types of software:
1. System Software
2. Application Software
System Software - Responsible for generating the user interface.
Four components of system software are:
1. Operating system – Allows the hardware to communicate with the application software. Example: Windows 10, and Mac OS.
2. User interface – Allows the user to interact with the computer. Comprise of icons and menus that allow the user to control the computer or electronic device.
3. Utility programs – Perform tasks such as; file renaming, file compression, file conversion, disk defragmentation, backing up data, and antivirus scanning.
4. Drivers - A program whose purpose is to translate commands from the operating system into commands that the hardware understands. Example: Computers contain drivers for the printer, keyboard, scanner, monitor and mouse.
Application Software
Database - Allows you to organize, retrieve and manipulate information.
Example: Microsoft Access
Spreadsheet – Allows you to perform calculations, and analyze data.
Example: Microsoft Excel
Presentation – Allows you to create slides to make presentation.
Example: Microsoft PowerPoint
Desktop Publishing – Allows you to create beautiful works of art. Example: Flyers, newsletters, and business cards.
Example: Microsoft Publisher
Communication - Allows you to communicate with others electronically. Examples: Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail.
Examples: Gmail, Yahoo
Web browser - Allows you to access the internet. Example: Google Chrome, Safari, Fire Fox, Internet Explorer
